Miter overview

Miter is a cloud-based platform that brings HR, payroll, field operations, and expense management together for construction and field service contractors. The company’s official JSON-LD names Connor Watumull and Tobin Paxton as founders, and its current positioning describes it as “the modern construction operating system” built to help contractors “build with confidence” by connecting people, projects, and payments in one place.

The product is organized into three bundles — HCM (payroll, HRIS, benefits, recruiting, performance, learning), Field Operations (time tracking, scheduling, production, daily reports, safety), and Expense Management (reimbursements, per diems, corporate cards) — rather than the estimating-to-billing project management workflow that platforms like Procore or Buildertrend cover. Miter’s differentiator is depth on the payroll and compliance side: certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union fringe reporting are core features, not add-ons, which matters for contractors doing public-sector or union work across multiple states.

Miter has grown quickly. Construction Tech Review cited more than 800 contractors and named Miter its “Construction-Based Payroll and HR Software of the Year 2025.”

Pricing

Miter does not publish pricing. Its own field operations FAQ states plainly that “pricing is based on company size, headcount, and the products your team uses,” and that buyers get a custom quote after a demo. This is standard for construction HCM/payroll software at this scope, but it means there’s no way to self-serve a price estimate the way you can with, say, a flat per-user SaaS tool — budget for a sales conversation before you can compare costs against alternatives like Rippling, Sage, or ADP’s construction-focused offerings.

Features and integrations

The Field Operations side covers mobile time tracking with geofencing and kiosk clock-in, crew scheduling with SMS alerts, daily reports with photos and e-signatures, production tracking (labor, equipment, quantities), and safety inspections and incident logging — all built to reduce the paper-timesheet-to-payroll gap that construction back offices deal with. The HCM side covers payroll (including certified payroll and union reporting), HRIS with digital onboarding, recruiting with AI-assisted job postings, benefits administration, and a built-in learning management system for safety and skills training. Expense Management adds reimbursements, per diems, and corporate cards with automatic job-costing.

Miter’s integration list is the most concrete evidence of how seriously it treats the construction back office: direct connections to Sage Intacct, Sage 100, Sage 300 CRE, Oracle NetSuite, Acumatica, QuickBooks Online and Desktop, and Xero push job-costed labor and payroll data into the ERPs contractors already run for accounting. It also connects to project and field-service platforms including Procore, ServiceTitan, BuildOps, and HCSS, plus HR-adjacent tools like BambooHR, Checkr, Indeed, and LinkedIn for hiring workflows. A CMiC integration is listed as “coming soon” on Miter’s own integrations page as of mid-2026.

Strengths and weaknesses

Miter’s strength is narrow and real: it solves construction payroll and HR compliance — certified payroll, prevailing wage, multi-state tax, and union fringe reporting — better than generic HCM tools, and its mobile-first field app is clearly built for fast crew adoption. Construction Tech Review and the company’s own materials support that the product-market fit is real, not just marketing.

The weakness is scope. Miter is not a project management, estimating, or scheduling-for-trade-coordination tool — it doesn’t do bids, submittals, RFIs, or drawing markup, so it has to sit next to (and sync with) a real construction ERP or PM platform rather than replace one. It’s also a younger company with a shorter track record and fewer independent reviews than payroll incumbents like ADP, Paychex, or Sage’s construction products. And because pricing is entirely quote-based, buyers can’t do a quick self-serve cost comparison the way they can with more transactional SaaS tools.

Who should pick Miter (and who shouldn’t)

Pick Miter if you’re a specialty, mechanical, or general contractor buried in certified payroll, union reporting, or multi-state compliance, and you want one mobile-first system for time tracking, scheduling, HR, and expenses that plugs into the ERP you already use for accounting. It’s a particularly good fit for contractors who’ve outgrown paper timesheets and spreadsheet payroll but don’t want to replace their existing Sage, NetSuite, Acumatica, or Viewpoint setup.

Skip Miter if what you actually need is project management — estimating, bidding, scheduling of trade sequencing, submittals, or drawing markup — since that’s simply not what the product does; look at Procore, Buildertrend, or BuildOps instead. Also skip it if you need transparent, self-serve pricing to compare options quickly, or if you operate outside the U.S., since certified payroll and union-compliance features are built around U.S. requirements.

Pros

  • Construction-specific payroll compliance — certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union fringe reporting are built in, not bolted on
  • Deep, verified integrations with major construction ERPs (Sage Intacct/100/300 CRE, NetSuite, Acumatica, Viewpoint) reduce duplicate job-costing entry
  • Also connects to leading PM/FSM platforms (Procore, ServiceTitan, BuildOps, HCSS), so it layers onto tools contractors already run
  • Growing customer base: more than 800 contractors as of 2025
  • Native iOS and Android field apps with strong app-store ratings support fast crew adoption for clock-in, daily reports, and paystubs

Cons

  • Not a project management or estimating tool — no bidding, submittals, or drawing markup; it has to sit alongside a real PM/ERP system
  • No published pricing; cost is quote-based on headcount and product bundle, so buyers must go through a sales process to get a number
  • You should expect a shorter track record and a thinner base of third-party reviews than incumbent construction payroll/HCM vendors
  • Certified payroll, prevailing wage, and union features are U.S.-specific, so it doesn't serve contractors operating outside the U.S.
  • Sits in the site's construction-pm bucket for navigation purposes, but it's really an HCM/payroll/expense platform, not a scheduling or estimating tool
