Samsara is a sales-led fleet management and safety platform for vehicles and assets, founded in San Francisco in 2015.
Samsara is a connected-operations platform built around fleet management, safety, and asset visibility. Its homepage says it is “the leading fleet management and safety platform” and explicitly calls out AI-powered dash cams, real-time GPS, ELD, telematics, maintenance, routing, and compliance. The products overview frames the platform the same way: one integrated system meant to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability rather than a narrow point solution.
The company also has a clear founding story. On its About Us page, Samsara says it was founded by Sanjit Biswas and John Bicket, who previously co-founded Meraki. The same page identifies San Francisco as the company’s headquarters and birthplace, and the contact page shows 1 De Haro St, San Francisco, CA 94103.
Samsara does not publish a simple rate card. Its pricing flow starts by asking how many vehicles or assets you manage — 1–5, 6–29, 30–499, 500–4,999, or 5,000+ — and then moves into a quote path. That is a strong signal that Samsara sells on a quote-based, sales-led model rather than self-serve checkout.
That setup makes sense for a product with this much surface area. Once you are pricing dash cams, telematics hardware, compliance, maintenance, and asset tracking together, the real buying question is usually deployment scope, not a single sticker price.
Samsara’s product surface is broad enough to cover the day-to-day work of fleet and operations teams rather than only vehicle tracking. The site’s nav and marketplace pages point to Fleet Telematics, GPS Fleet Tracking, Maintenance, Routing & Dispatch, Equipment Management, Asset Tracking, Trailer Tracking, AI Multicam, Driver Coaching, Drowsiness Detection, and Safety Reporting & Insights.
Its App Marketplace is the other big part of the story. Samsara says the marketplace connects its operations data to 350+ third-party applications across TMS & compliance, utilization & maintenance, insurance & safety, routing & navigation, and vehicle & equipment OEM use cases. That makes the platform much easier to fit into a larger stack than a single-purpose telematics tool.
Samsara’s biggest strength is breadth with coherence. It is not just a GPS tracker, and it is not just a camera vendor. The platform ties safety, utilization, maintenance, routing, compliance, and asset visibility into a single operating view, which is useful when dispatch, compliance, and maintenance all touch the same fleet.
It also has unusually wide industry coverage. The site surfaces dedicated paths for transportation & logistics, construction, food & beverage, passenger transit, field services, public sector, and K-12, which reinforces that Samsara is meant to work across mixed fleets rather than only one narrow vertical.
The downside is the same thing that makes it valuable: it is a lot of platform. Small operators looking for a basic tracker or a cheap dispatch tool will probably find Samsara heavier than they need, and they will have to go through the quote flow before they know whether the economics make sense.
Pick Samsara when the buying problem is “we need one connected-operations system for vehicles and assets.” It is a good fit when you care about safety, compliance, routing, maintenance, and reporting together, and when the team is large enough to benefit from a broad platform and a real integration ecosystem.
Do not pick it if the real need is just bookkeeping or very basic dispatch. In that case, a lighter tool will be faster to roll out and cheaper to own.
